Terms of Service
The short version: Rate a Gamer is a place to share your honest opinion about how someone played in a match you were in. You must be 18 or older and live where the site is open. You're responsible for what you post. Reports are opinions from gamers, not statements of fact by us. Don't post personal info, threats, hate or sexual images. We can remove anything that breaks the rules, and we never charge anyone to remove a report.
1. Agreement
These Terms are an agreement between you and the owner and operator of Rate a Gamer at rateagamer.com (the "Service", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms, our Community Guidelines and our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
2. Who can use Rate a Gamer
- You must be 18 or older. We delete accounts that belong to anyone younger.
- You must live where the Service is open. Right now that's . We may open or close places as laws change. Don't use a VPN or false information to get around this.
- One account per person. Don't create accounts for someone else, share accounts, or come back on a new account after we've banned you.
- Each game account (Steam, Battle.net or Bungie) can be linked to only one Rate a Gamer account, and only by its owner.
- Choose a username and profile picture that follow the Community Guidelines. We may reset a username or remove a picture that breaks them.
- Keep your password secure. You're responsible for activity on your account.
- You can't use the Service if you're barred from doing so under applicable law.
3. What the Service is
Rate a Gamer lets signed-in gamers post reports about how other gamers behaved in online games: a 1 to 5 star rating, tags, written details, a match ID and optional screenshots. Reports, ratings, tags, match IDs and screenshots are created by users and reflect those users' own opinions and experiences. We don't adopt or endorse them.
We check a few things automatically. For some games, a match ID can be looked up with the game publisher's official records; a report then shows "Match verified" (the records show both gamers in the match) or "Match found" (they show the reported gamer). Everything else, including "Match ID given", is the reviewer's own word.
Ratings, verdict labels, reviewer levels, badges, points, the Wall of Shame, the Hall of Fame and the Top 10 Contributors are calculated automatically from user reports and activity, using the rules on our Help page. The playful labels on the lists (for example "L" and "W") are jokes based on report counts, not statements of fact about anyone.
4. Your content
You're responsible for everything you post, and your reports show your username and profile picture. When you post a report, you promise that:
- You played in the match you're describing, with the gamer you're reporting, and any match ID you give is for that match.
- Your report is your honest opinion and an accurate account of what you saw.
- It doesn't include anyone's personal information, and it isn't defamatory, harassing, threatening, hateful, sexual or otherwise illegal.
- You took the screenshots you upload or have the right to share them, they haven't been edited to mislead, and they don't show nudity or sexual content.
- Your report follows the Community Guidelines.
Profile pictures (including GIFs) must follow the picture rules in the Community Guidelines. Every new picture is checked before other people see it, and pictures can be reported and removed later.
You keep ownership of what you post. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, display and distribute your content, and to calculate ratings, rankings, levels and badges from it, to operate, improve and promote the Service. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we must keep to comply with law, resolve disputes or enforce these Terms, and backup copies that expire on their normal schedule.
You can edit or delete your reports at any time, download your data, and delete your account from Settings.
5. Things you can't do
- Post anything the Community Guidelines prohibit.
- Organize or join a campaign to flood a gamer with reports, flags or helpful votes, or use more than one account.
- Post fake reports or fake match IDs, including positive reports about yourself or friends.
- Trade, buy or sell helpful votes, reports, levels, badges or accounts.
- Offer, request or accept money, items or favors to post, change, flag or remove a report.
- Link a game account that isn't yours, or impersonate anyone, including when opening a dispute or claiming a gamertag.
- Scrape, copy or republish the Service's content in bulk, or use it to build a profile of a person, track them, or contact them outside the game.
- Probe, attack, overload or get around the security, location rules, rate limits or access rules of the Service.
- Use the Service for anything illegal.
6. Moderation
We may review, hide or remove any content, and restrict, suspend or close any account, at our discretion and with or without notice, including when we believe content breaks these Terms or the Guidelines or creates legal risk. Reports flagged by several accounts are hidden automatically until a moderator reviews them, and a report flagged as a nude or sexual image is hidden straight away. A sudden burst of reports about one gamer from new accounts pauses new reports on that gamer while we check. We don't edit what users write; we either keep a report or remove it. If we remove your report you'll see the reason, and you can appeal once. We aren't obligated to monitor content, and leaving content up isn't an endorsement of it.
7. If you've been reported
If you believe reports about you are false, abusive or include personal information, follow the process on our Disputes page. While a dispute is open, the gamer is left off the Wall of Shame and the Hall of Fame. If you can show a gamertag is yours, you can post one public response under its reports. We never charge anyone to remove, hide or change a report, and no one acting for us ever will. If someone asks you for payment, tell us at .
8. Intimate images
Nude or sexual images of real people are never allowed. If an image of you (or someone you represent) was shared here without consent, use our intimate image removal form. We remove valid requests within 48 hours, as the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act requires.
9. Copyright
We respond to copyright notices as described on our Copyright (DMCA) page, and we close the accounts of repeat infringers.
10. Game names and trademarks
Rate a Gamer isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any game publisher or platform. Game and platform names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify which game a report is about.
11. Third-party services
If you sign in with Discord or Google, or link a Steam, Battle.net or Bungie account, your use of those services is governed by their own terms. Linking happens on their sites; we never see your password for them. We aren't responsible for third-party services.
12. Disclaimers
THE SERVICE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON'T WARRANT THAT ANY REPORT, RATING, RANKING, LEVEL OR MATCH CHECK IS ACCURATE, COMPLETE OR CURRENT, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.
13. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE AND OUR OWNERS, EMPLOYEES AND AGENTS WON'T BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR ANY CONTENT POSTED BY USERS. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US$50) OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
14. Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the operator of Rate a Gamer and its owners, employees and agents from any claims, damages, losses and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your content, your use of the Service, or your breach of these Terms or of anyone's rights.
15. Ending your use
You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or end your access at any time. Sections 4 (license, for retained copies), 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 18 survive.
16. Governing law and resolving disagreements
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before filing any claim, you agree to contact us at and try to resolve it informally for at least 30 days. Any claim that isn't resolved informally must be brought in the state or federal courts located in , and you and we consent to their jurisdiction, except where the law of your place of residence requires otherwise.
17. Changes
We may update these Terms. When we make material changes, we'll update the effective date and ask you to accept the new Terms before you can post again. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept them.
18. General
These Terms, the Guidelines and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision isn't a waiver. You can't transfer your rights under these Terms; we may transfer ours, including to a company we form to run the Service, or in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
